When breastfeeding, the most important thing to have is an amazing breast pump. I have been breastfeeding and pumping for my newborn twins for the past 4 months. An electric double pump specifically is one you need if you will be doing a lot of pumping. A few weeks ago i wrote a blog post on essential things you need for your nursing station so be sure to check that out. Also, a blog post on how to successfully breastfeed twins.Currently, i use the Spectra s1 double electric pump and have loved it so far.
Let me tell you how my pumping session for my now 4 year old daughter went. When she was born, for whatever reason i tried the Medela pump in style and it did not work for me. I then went to a lactation specialist to see if i was doing it wrong which i was not. She then had me use a hospital grade pump, still nothing. By nothing, i mean i got something but not even up to half of an ounce no matter when i pump or how long. I ordered so many different sizes of flanges, called Medela and got a new pump mailed to me, still nothing.
Eventually i rented a hospital grade Medela pump for a month and nothing changed lol. After trying several other brands and also so many manual pumps and so many lactation sessions, the specialist suggested i give up on pumping which i refused. She then taught me how to milk myself. Yes, you heard that right, MILK myself like they milk cows lolll. Best believe i did this for a year and 2 months. It was crazy, i would sit down, sanitize my hands and get to work milking myself into the milk bottles. I was actually really good at it since i had no other choice. My arms would hurt like crazy by the time i was done with each session. It was a crazy period but i definitely wanted to keep breastfeeding and since i was back to work, i had to pump somehow.
Anyway, fast forward to my twins, i decided to try medela again and still no luck, my insurance paid for the Ameda and still nothing. Finally after reading reviews, i decided to give Spectra a shot and that was the end of my pumping war.
Since reviews helped me make my decision and as requested by several friends, i decided to write my personal review on this breast pump. It is the Spectra S1 breast pump. Firstly, you need a double electric breast pump to save you a ton of time pumping, however they can be quite pricey especially if your insurance does not cover it.
This particular pump costs $199, so it was not a bad price.
Pros of the Spectra s1
It has a built in rechargeable battery and AC adapter so you can use your breast pump while moving around and doing other things. I usually also use my pump in the car while running errands. This battery allows for about 3 hours of pumping time.
Shuts itself off at 30mins
I recently noticed this feature and love it. It shuts off automatically after you have been pumping for 30minutes as a safety feature. This works great to prevent excessive pumping if you happen to fall asleep while pumping especially at night.
It has two night light levels for middle of the night pumping which helps so you do not have to turn on the room lights or pump in total darkness.
It has a pair of back flow protectors which makes it a closed system so your milk will not come in contact with the pump motor. This also means it can be used by multiple people and is more hygienic. Unlike the Medela Pump in Style Advance or the Medela Freestyle which are open systems and thus have no physical barrier between the tubing and motor.
Super gentle suction
Compared to all the other breast pumps i have tried, this has the most gentle suction and i think it’s because it has a unique suction with vibration so it feels like a gentle massage. I hate pumping personally especially with how uncomfortable it usually feels. However with the spectra, it is a lot more gentle. I still do not like pumping but not because of discomfort.
It is super quiet compared to other breast pumps which is great when pumping in the middle of the night so you do not wake anyone up.
This display allows you to see how long you have been pumping, in what mode you are currently in (massage or expression mode), and what suction level or speed you are on. I love that i can see how long i am pumping for so i can time myself.
Saves your last settings
You are able to to have your last settings saved so you can use the same setting every time you pump.
You can either do dual or single pumping
Dual and single pumping by removing and closing off one of the tubing ends if you only want to pump one breast. I usually do dual since i breastfeed my twins together.
Cycle speed and suction strength can be independently adjusted
The let down mode and the expression modes have different suction levels and cycle speeds so you can adjust them independently. With this, you can control both to the level that is comfortable for you and adjust as you move on.
Cons of the Spectra s1
It weighs only 3 pounds but has a bulky shape to carry around and may not fit regular bags.
Limited flange sizes
It does not have as many flange sizes as others like Medela have. Although so far the ones that came with the pump have worked great for me
Last saved settings
This can be both a pro and con. It is a con because i gradually increase the suction throughout my pumping, so it can hurt a bit if i turn the pump on and it immediately starts in the expression mode and at that high suction level i ended with the last time. It may help if you remember to turn it to let down mode before you begin but i hardly remember to do this lol.
Wide neck bottles
This can make it hard to find bottles since my previous breast pump bottles do not work for it so if you want extra bottles, you need to invest in some more.
